What Are Your Key Messages?

There are so many things you want to tell potential clients about your business. Why you do this. How you got started. How you help people. So much to say right?

But how do you tell them everything without getting into too much detail and losing their attention?

You boil it down to 5 Key Messages. This is something I do with my clients. We look at everything we would like to say about the company and then decide what are the five most important things we want people to know. Those become the 5 Key Messages.

These messages guide everything we write. They provide ideas for blog posts, social media messages and they live on the home page of the website.

Here are a few tips for creating your five key messages:

1. Make them clear, concise and simple to understand - Don’t use jargon or flowery language to try to make you look smart. Use language that makes it really easy for people to understand what you do; in fact, make it so simple that they could explain it to someone else.

2. Keep them short – People are exposed to thousands of messages a day so keep these short. Bite size nuggets are easy for people to digest.

3. State their problem and explain your solution - Let your clients and potential clients know that you understand the problem they are facing and you have the solution to fix it. Don’t get caught up in talking about you and your background in these messages – if you do you’ll lose them. Focus on how you and your company can serve them. It’s about them, not you.

4. Focus on the benefits – Most people don’t care that the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus phone has a 4100 mAh battery. What they care about is that the battery will last all day. Your messages should focus on the benefits you provide.
