Hiring Someone vs. DIY

There is so much involved with marketing these days that it hard to do it all yourself. So should you tackle it yourself or hire someone to do it for you?

The answer depends on a number of factors including what stage your business is in, what kind of marketing you’re doing and what your skill set includes. So let’s break this down…

1.       What are your goals?

If the success of your business depends on you consistently generating leads, then your marketing is the lifeblood of your business.  Something this important should probably be left to a professional.

2.       What stage is your business in?

If you’re a new business with no marketing budget, then you’re likely going to have to do it yourself for a while.  In this case you should put together a marketing plan that is reasonable for you to execute on a weekly or monthly basis.  You may not be able to do everything you would like to do right away, but choose a few marketing channels and be consistent with them.  Don’t try to do too much as it will overwhelm you, and then you are likely to give up.

3.       Do you want a comprehensive marketing plan that will grow your business?

If so, then this is the time to hire someone to handle your marketing.  If you have enough work, you can consider a full time marketing person, but understand that now-a-days no one has all the skill sets needed to execute a comprehensive marketing strategy, so you will need to still outsource some of the work like web development, SEO and videos.  The other options are to hire a part-time marketing person or a marketing firm.

Here’s a word of advice … if you decide to hire someone or an outside firm, make sure you hire someone with experience.  Many small business owners don’t value this position very highly and look for someone who can work cheap.  This is a case of “you get what you pay for.”  If you really want to grow your business, then look at this as an investment that will have an ROI.  If it doesn’t, you’ve hired the wrong person or firm.
